Plant-based alternatives

According to a 2021 IRi shopper study, “vegan” is already a very important product characteristic for 14.4 percent of consumers.1 With plant-based alternatives, we offer consumers choices for an even more sustainable lifestyle. We produce both chocolates and sweets from purely vegetable ingredients, for example the Schogetten and FRITT brands, as well as block chocolates and couvertures for private labels. To provide clear orientation for consumers, most of our products for the European Union markets are marked with the “vegan” variant of the V-Label. We use alternative labels in other countries.

Vegan candy is gaining attention and being purchased more and more. According to the IRi Retail Panel, vegan block chocolate reached a market share of 3.5 percent in food retailing in Germany in 2021.2 The level is still low, but growth is high: Compared to 2020, the market grew by 13 percent.2

In the many delicious vegan Schogetten variants, animal ingredients have been replaced with oat milk and vegetable fats. Consumers know and appreciate the plant-based milk alternatives: This product group’s turnover grew by 21.8 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year.3 The outer packaging is just as sustainable – it is made of paper.

We also produce vegan block chocolates and vegan couvertures for private labels.

Vegan confectioneries

We use gelatin in the classic FRITT chewy strips. In many of our fruity vegan FRITT varieties, we have replaced this key texturizer with a blend of plant-based ingredients, including gum arabic and rice protein. The development process for the best possible chewing experience was complex but successful: 97 percent of testers rated the taste as good to very good in a product test.
